Central Otago has plenty to offer Pinot fans. The Cloudy Bay Te Wahi 2021 showcases the dark-fruity side of this region: cherry liqueur and dark chocolate on the nose, accompanied by a hint of fresh mint. On the palate, plum jelly and delicate coffee notes meet juicy acidity. The tannins feel fine and silky, providing a smooth framework for the fruit.

Behind this blend lie two distinct vineyards. Northburn, on Lake Dunstan, contributes structure and intensity thanks to its stony soils. Calvert in Bannockburn adds fragrant fruit from silty, loamy soils. The Pinot Noir is aged for twelve months in French barriques, 30 per cent of which are new. ‘Te Wāhi’ means ‘the place’ in the Māori language – so the two places of origin are also reflected in the name.

Try this wine with braised shoulder of lamb, game or roasted root vegetables. Served at around 12 to 15 °C, you’ll be able to appreciate the interplay of fruit and freshness.
