Description
PIWI, or fungus-resistant, varieties are becoming increasingly popular. Cabernet Blanc is also one such variety and has been authorised as a quality wine in Austria since last year. It is an interspecific cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and resistant partner varieties and was first bred in Switzerland in 1991.
Alongside the PIWI varieties Muscaris and Souvignier Gris, Josef Scharl has devoted himself to Cabernet Blanc over the past five years and immediately won the 2022 wine competition with it.
This dry white wine is light and fruity and can resemble a Sauvignon Blanc or a Riesling. It is classically matured in steel tanks and shows aromas of gooseberries and currants. There is a touch of spice, with a taut structure and pleasant acidity. Juicy on the palate, it offers plenty of tang in the glass and delivers marvellous drinking pleasure.
