Domäne Wachau – Where Wine and Wachau Become One

📍 Loiben, Lower Austria – Heart of the Wachau

Between steep terraces, ancient cellars, and the gentle flow of the Danube, you’ll find one of Austria’s true wine treasures: Domäne Wachau. Once you’ve been here, you understand – this place is about more than wine. It’s about origin, hands-on craftsmanship, and people who pour heart and soul into every vine.

The Power of Community

Domäne Wachau isn’t your average winery. It’s a cooperative – but one that has completely redefined the concept. Around 250 winegrowers work together, cultivating about 160 hectares of vineyards, most of them organically. Each grower brings knowledge, tradition, and a deep respect for nature. The result? Wines full of character, depth, and a clear sense of place.

Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber

Roman & Heinz – The Visionaries

At the helm are Roman Horvath (Master of Wine) and cellar master Heinz Frischengruber. These two are not just experts – they’re passionate wine minds. They know every parcel, every stone wall, and every vine. From pruning to the final hand harvest, nothing is left to chance. Herbicides or insecticides? Absolutely not. Instead, it’s all about biodiversity and sustainability.

Great Sites, Great Wines

Names like Achleiten, Kellerberg or Brandstatt are legendary among wine lovers. These steep vineyards deliver fruit that captures the full potential of the Wachau. The resulting wines – often spontaneously fermented with minimal sulfur – are pure, clear, and incredibly drinkable.

Tradition Meets New Paths

Beyond the classic single-vineyard wines, Domäne Wachau reveals its bolder side with the Backstage Series. These natural wines are aged in amphora, concrete, or stone – unfiltered, raw, and full of personality. They offer a fresh perspective on the Wachau, without losing the estate’s signature precision.

More Than Just Wine: A Place to Experience

Visiting Domäne Wachau is an experience. From the baroque Kellerschlössel and its seasonal wine tavern, to guided vineyard hikes and tastings in the estate’s vinotheque – there’s so much to discover and enjoy. No wonder they were named Falstaff Winery of the Year 2024 and are a must-visit destination for wine lovers from around the world.
