Lagrein is one of those grape varieties that follows its own path, and that is exactly what makes it so compelling. This example from the Loacker winery clearly shows why Lagrein, the oldest indigenous grape variety of South Tyrol, deserves such attention. Powerful and self-assured, yet surprisingly elegant, it is a red wine with real personality.

The grapes come from steep vineyards on the Mitterberg, from vines that are in some cases more than 50 years old. For decades, the winery has worked consistently biodynamically, not as a trend, but out of deep conviction. This sense of calm and care is clearly reflected in the glass. Aged partly in barriques and partly in large wooden barrels, the wine gains structure and depth while fully preserving its fruit.

On the nose, it is very aromatic, with dark berries, fine spice and the typical floral notes that make Lagrein so distinctive. A delicate hint of violet lends the wine an exciting and almost refined character. On the palate, it is juicy and precise, with ripe, firm tannins and a lively acidity that provides freshness. Despite its power, the wine remains beautifully balanced throughout. The finish is fruity, long and pleasantly persistent.

Its origin in South Tyrol gives this Lagrein additional tension and structure. A high-quality, mature red wine with character and excellent ageing potential. Ideal with robust meat dishes, game or braised vegetables, or simply enjoyed on its own from a large glass when you are in the mood for something distinctive. A Lagrein that leaves an impression, not loudly, but with lasting presence.
