Weingut Carlo Schmitt

Germany / Moselle / Leiwen

Carlo Schmitt’s story is among the most remarkable on the Mosel. What now appears to be the rise of a talented young winemaker was, for a long time, far from certain. Following a tragic accident involving his father, the future of the family winery was in doubt. The vineyard area had to be significantly reduced, and for many years the business operated on a very small scale until Carlo was old enough to assume responsibility himself.

Today, he is guiding the winery back to its former strength with notable dedication. Step by step, both the vineyard holdings and the estate’s reputation are growing. This is hardly surprising, as some of the vineyards lie in the steepest and most striking sites along the Mosel. Much of the work continues to be carried out by hand, requiring considerable effort and resulting in low yields.

The focus is, naturally, on Riesling. On the slate soils around Leiwen, wines are produced with vibrancy, freshness and impressive precision. The aim is not showiness or grandstanding, but rather an expression of terroir, drinking pleasure and character.

This is exactly what makes Carlo Schmitt’s wines so compelling. They present the Mosel at its finest, juicy, lively and full of energy. At the same time, each bottle reflects part of the story of a winery that has rebuilt itself through passion and perseverance.
