Polz’s 2019 Czamillonberg Sauvignon Blanc demonstrates just how exciting a well-matured Sauvignon Blanc from Southern Styria can be. The historic Czamillonberg vineyard is one of the region’s earliest documented vineyards. Remarkable wines were already being produced here as far back as the 1920s. Today, Polz captures the distinctive character of this vineyard with great patience and precision.

The Sauvignon Blanc grapes grow on ‘Opok’, the calcareous soil typical of Southern Styria. After hand-harvesting, the wine is matured in large, second-hand wooden barrels. The wood does not dominate, but rather lends the wine structure, depth and added complexity.

In the glass, it presents a medium golden-yellow colour with green highlights. On the nose, you’ll find ripe fruit with hints of papaya, passion fruit and grapefruit. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc is juicy and harmonious, with fine acidity, good bite and plenty of substance. Ripe tropical fruit and a subtle spiciness accompany the long finish.

A Sauvignon Blanc for anyone who prefers their wine a little more serious, mature and complex. Particularly lovely with pan-fried or steamed fish, seafood, veal or a hearty pasta dish. Feel free to pour it into a large glass and give it a little time – this Czamillonberg has quite a story to tell.
