Rioja can be straightforward – yet at the same time display a great deal of character. The El Jardín de La Emperatriz Tinto Crianza 2022 is a fine example of this: an accessible, classic Rioja from Hermanos Hernáiz, which already comes across as remarkably refined in the very first glass.

The grapes are harvested by hand and consist of 81 per cent Tempranillo and 19 per cent Garnacha. Fermentation takes place in steel and concrete tanks, after which the wine is aged for 15 months in French and American oak barrels. This gives it depth without losing its freshness.

On the nose, it is crisp and fresh, with delicate fruit and spicy nuances. On the palate, it is refined, elegant and pleasantly structured. The tannins remain very fine, the acidity keeps the wine lively, and the finish leaves a lovely, classic spiciness.

A Rioja that pairs just as well with tapas as it does with lamb, stews or grilled meat.
