Georgia - The Cradle of Wine
Georgia - from tradition to modernity
With a history of winemaking stretching back some 8,000 years, Georgia is considered the cradle of wine. Archaeological finds date back to around 6,000 BC. Today, the country has around 50,000 hectares of vineyards. Over 500 indigenous grape varieties make this wine-growing region particularly diverse, including Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Kisi and Chinuri. A key element of Georgian wine culture is the traditional Qvevri method, in which wine is fermented and aged in large earthenware vessels. Discover the fascinating world of Georgian wine at 9wines.
